Residential elevators with counter-weighted overhead drives are designed to eliminate the need for a separate machine room. The overhead motor and control panel for the elevator is located at the top of the hoistway. When building floor plans do not have enough room for a machine space, the overhead drives provide another alternative. The overhead drive system does, however, require a minimum overhead height of 8’-6” at the upper floor being served by the elevator. Additionally, access to the motor and controller will be necessary at the top of the elevator shaft.
